I tried to explain in a condensed way of what is happening with this Bill C-45 and the events leading up to it..in 1969 the Canadian Govt. introduced what was know as the 1969 White paper policy,, this was Canadas first major attempt at relegating its fiduciary responsibilities to the provinces,, basically turning our reserve lands into municipalities,,,this caused tremendous uproar in the Native world,, organizations formed and Natives united to defeat this policy, which they successfully did
It was in 1982 that the Canadian repatriation happened with Trudeau.this was when Canada decided to become a sovereign state ,a country on its own, with nothing to do with Britain, but before that could happen Britain insisted that they must assume control and responsablilty to certain obligations, one of them beign the BNA act which also included the obligations to uphold the treaty rights of Canadas native peoples ( forever).
Of course, they agreed.. ELijah Harper was the one who blocked the Meech lake accord, which was an attempt at constitutional reform,, so even though Canada promised to uphold treaty obligations they havent stopped trying to change legislation to renege on that obligation,, the chiefs did not sign this newly passed Bill c-45 it was what they call an omnibus bill, which is a number of bills passed all at once, this was introduced in parliament by a member and then eventually passed last friday.
There was a publication ban on the bill meaning that media could not report anything on it, thats why we never heard anything.. but they can now easily , transfer Indian lands to anyone, its been a long time that they have been trying to get control of ALL the lands of our territories
